Learn
the Art of Henna

Learn
the ancient art of henna, also known as mehndi. In this class,
you will learn how to choose and mix the right ingredients for
a natural henna paste, how to apply designs using modern techniques,
and learn the basic visual vocabulary from Asia, Africa, and The
Middle East. Along the way you'll learn some of the history, traditions
and mystique associated with henna use throughout time. This class
is suitable for both teens and adults. It's a great class for
Moms and daughters!

The
class will include:
History, geographical distribution and traditions of henna
Properties of different henna powders (with demonstrations)
"Black" henna myth and warnings
Basic chemistry of henna and how it stains the skin
Henna recipes and will make a batch in each class
Henna application tools
How to use cake cones for henna
How to roll your own cones from easy to find and inexpensive sources.
Make your own transfers
Applying sealants and wraps
How to care for your design so it lasts the longest
The basic elements of traditional designs from Morocco, India,
and Iran
How to look at a design and break it down into easy-to-draw components
AND
lots of in-class practice

Class
participants will buy Natasha's henna kit -- a $25 value for only
$15 at La Mesa Parks and Recreation
The
kit comes in a sturdy canvas bag and contains:
- Booklets
with henna recipes, basic designs, traditional designs, and
resources.
- "Black"
henna warning with FDA and other citations
- 2
Modern henna cones with metal tip and coupler
- Cleaning
brush for the metal tip
- Henna
paste strainer
- 50g
of premium henna powder
- Materials
for making hand-rolled cones
- Design
tweaking tools

Learn
the Ancient Art of Henna Body Art is offered through the La
Mesa Parks and Recreation Community Services The next class
cycle starts September 12 and runs for 3 consecutive weeks. Information
about times and dates will be posted mid-summer. Location: La
Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, (619) 667-1300.
Natasha
can also teach this class to private groups for a $100 flat fee
for a 3 hour class plus each student must buy the kit. There is
no class minimum, but the maximum number of students is 20. This
class can be taught in any room that is near a sink. Contact Natasha
