Regional Variations

As might be expected, there are regional variations in design style.  Henna patterns from India are easily distinguishable from those from Morocco and other areas.  I can only begin to touch on the subject -- I'm definitely no expert!  But here are a few things to look for:
 

  • kinds of designs (geometric, floral, animals, etc)
  • boldness of lines
  • lots of frilly bits to fill in blank spaces or lots of blank space
  • representational or symbolic (does it look like a bird or a flower or more abstract)
If you look at lots of designs from many different regions, you'll begin to notice that each place has its own regional pattern "dialect" and vocabulary.
